Why not antipathy? Most of it sucks. Actually the trappings of contemporary art creates antipathy. Overly academic, poorly executed work disguised as conceptual, bad entertainment as performance – did I mention insular?
The world of participatory technology seems foreign to many, but is also intriguing as it carries many of the qualities we value in the arts. Participatory technology is by nature disruptive, but so is artistic expression. Both are fueled by the same human need to communicate and connect. Both shape and are shaped by the larger goals of communities and cultures. And while our impulse might be to react defensively, we need to embrace the opportunity in this transformation. Now is the moment to revisit our purpose, refocus our values, and recalibrate our expressive intent.

I think the best hope artists or any content producer can have in making forays into new digital business models is to look at the experimentation that music industry is engaged in. As the first truly gutted IP industry by web users , the record companies and the artists have had to overcome bad decisions, unsupportable business models and cheap digital copies.
This presentation of how Trent Reznor has approached product development and the new distribution realities without a big label should be encouraging to all of us in publishing/media or the arts.
